Spending weeks or months volunteering in another country is a life-changing experience and an unforgettable one at that – you’ll make friends, discover new cultures and see life from another point of view. In Madagascar, many international and local organizations offer volunteering opportunities throughout the year. Whatever your interest, you’ll certainly find one that suits you.

Promoting marine ecotourism with Cetamada

Whether you are looking for an internship or want to volunteer, this is the perfect example of eco-volunteering. Founded in 2009, Cetamada is a local association based on the island of Sainte Marie and works toward developing sustainable ecotourism, scientific research and marine conservation. In July during whale-watching season, volunteers have the opportunity to see humpback whales up close – a dream come true for whale-lovers.

Coral reef protection with Blue Ventures

Colorful fish, deep and clear water – join this award-winning dive expedition in Madagascar and you can help wildlife in a stunning setting. Blue Ventures’ slogan says it all: “discovery through research”. This experience takes place in the small village of Andavadoaka, at the heart of the Vezo region in south-west Madagascar, where projects include community conservation and coastal management. This British NGO has been operating in Madagascar since 2000 and is the first to help create a Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) for local communities.

World Wildlife Fund Madagascar

Locations vary depending on local projects led by WWF Madagascar. For three months, you will be part of a group of six or seven volunteers helping local staff on project implementation often located in remote but beautiful places in Madagascar. Reef or biodiversity conservation experiences promise to be unique and unforgettable. You will discover the Malagasy way of life and the natural kindness of local people.

Madagascar Research and Conservation Institute (MRCI)

This NGO was founded by a South African investor in 2003 and gained support from local government to attain its objectives. You can choose between a large array of activities: forest or turtle conservation, community English teaching, and development. Based on Nosy Komba island in the north-west, you will live in a renowned luxury travel destination in the Indian Ocean – one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Lemur Conservation Network

Lemurs are in danger of becoming extinct and therefore their plight deserves our attention. More than 50 conservation organizations are working to achieve the lemur survival action plan in Madagascar. From home, you can support the network through blogging and posting features on the topic to help spread the word. On the ground, you can monitor lemur species, work on data collection and conduct research for education in conservation. The Lemur Conservation Network is one such organisation helping to save this endangered species.

Maventy to improve children nutrition

Malnutrition is a reality in Madagascar. Maventy designs a mobile medical program established to fight against malnutrition in children, and improve maternal healthcare. Available only in the northern and southern regions, you can stay as long as you want to help. A healthcare background is the most sought-after skill, but the organisation also welcomes social, environmental and development backgrounds.

Frontier

If you love anything to do with nature, biodiversity and coral reefs, Frontier is the best organization with which to volunteer. The NGO is based in Nosy Be and six fields of opportunities are available to give your visit real meaning. You can also teach English or provide basic environmental education to children in the village. Your efforts will promote a positive lasting change to underfunded and disadvantaged public schools.
